The world can be an intimidating place for young professionals. From finding the right places to apply for work to polishing up presentations and first impressions, it isn’t always easy for young new workers to know what to do to find the right job. Here are three tips to stay motivated during a job search.

How to Stay Motivated During a Job Search

1. Look for a Mentor

It’s always helpful to seek advice from professionals with years of experience, so consider looking for a mentor who can show you the ropes. One great place for young professionals to seek mentors is your local Chamber of Commerce. These organizations are committed to improving networking and bringing businesses together in the community, making it easy to find other professionals in your area.

When you find a mentor, talk with them about what they look for in new candidates, whether or not they know of anyone who is hiring, and what they think the local job market looks like in the months moving forward.

2. Revamp Your Resume

young professionalsRework your resume to highlight the best features of your job history, education, and personality. Check for spelling and grammar problems, and consider leaving out details that aren’t pertinent to the job you’re applying for. Ask others, including your mentor, to look over the resume and give you their opinion. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh set of eyes to notice a mistake that could be costing you interviews.

3. Follow Up

After you apply for a job as a young professional, show that you are a tenacious and determined candidate by following up with employers. Focus on being direct and professional, never pushy and demanding. While you may not have gotten the job today, you could find yourself talking with the same employer in the future, so be kind when following up.
