Whether you’re taking to the skies, hopping on a train, or driving your car for travel, it’s common to neglect dental care while you’re away. Without proper oral care hygiene while on the road, you may end up dealing with complications such as gum disease or a root canal infection when you get home. Here are a few tips to ensure the best outcome.

How to Care for Your Teeth While Traveling

1. Have a Travel Kit Ready

gum diseaseYou can’t brush and floss if you lose your supplies. Invest in a travel-sized kit as a backup to your usual toothpaste, floss, and brush. These are easy to tuck in a travel bag. If you’re going by plane, pack the travel kit in your carry-on and other products that don’t qualify for carry-on in your checked bag. Should your luggage get lost, you’ll still have toiletries to use.

2. Set Reminders

You may forget daily habits when immersed in a new culture or relaxation mode. Set daily brushing and flossing reminders on your phone to help you keep up with the routine. The best times for cleanings are typically in the morning and evening in your hotel room.

3. Eat Tooth-Friendly Snacks

Healthy snacks are perfect for keeping your teeth clean and preventing gum disease. Apples, broccoli, and carrots are excellent choices that are also easy to pack. They’re loaded with nutrients and will also scrub plaque from your teeth. Enjoy string cheese or bottled milk to get your daily dose of calcium, and chew sugarless gum after meals. Gum can dislodge stuck food and promote saliva production to clean remaining food particles.
