Butcher block countertops are attractive, durable, and easy to maintain. The most routine cleaning aspect you will need to keep up with is sanitizing it, especially if you prepare raw meat on your counter. There are two effective methods for sanitizing this surface without damaging the wood, so choose one to preserve your beautiful new surface.

Methods to Clean Butcher Block Countertops

Sanitizing with Vinegar

butcher block countertopScrape off any food residue left on the countertop. If needed, you can use a metal spatula to get it off. Do not use a knife or anything with a sharp edge that could gouge the wood. Using a scrub brush or sponge, scrub the surface with mild dish soap and warm water. Rinse the surface with hot water, using a clean rag. Avoid saturating the surface by getting the rag wet, wiping, and rinsing the rag. Liberally apply undiluted white vinegar to the wood using a spray bottle. Let it sit for three to five minutes, then wipe it off with a damp dish cloth. Use a clean dish towel to thoroughly dry the surface.

Sanitizing with Bleach

Follow the same initial steps as the vinegar method to scrape off food residue and scrub the surface. Once it has been rinsed, you’re ready to use a bleach solution. Combine one teaspoon of bleach with one quart of water in a spray bottle. Spray it all over the countertop, then rub it into the wood with a clean rag. Let it air dry. Once it’s completely dry, use a fresh cloth to rub mineral oil into the wood and wipe off the excess.
