Digital devices are a ubiquitous feature of modern life and many of us spend hours every day looking at computer monitors and cell phone screens. While the radiation emitted by these devices is far below dangerous levels, they do have other features that can cause short-term discomfort and potentially long-term vision problems. Because these issues only grow worse with time, optometrists urge everyone who works on a computer to protect their vision and watch for signs of eye strain.

Are Computer Screens Bad for Your Eyes?

optometristProlonged computer use causes issues similar to carpal tunnel syndrome or other repetitive-motion injuries. As your eyes continuously scan back and forth, the same muscles are used over and over, eventually causing severe eye strain. Unlike reading a book or watching a movie, your eyes also have to contend with images and embedded videos, which forces them to constantly shift focus.

Some optometrists and researchers are also concerned about the amount of blue light emitted by digital screens. Because blue light has more energy than other colors on the spectrum, it may cause long-term damage to the retina, possibly leading to macular eye degeneration and other harmful conditions, according to some studies.

How to Protect Your Eyes

While avoiding computer use entirely is impossible, there are steps you can take to protect your vision and prevent eye strain. Start by taking regular breaks to rest your eyes and consider putting an anti-glare filter over your screen. This will reduce reflections and the amount of blue light that reaches your eyes.

Adjusting your monitor can also minimize the risk of eye strain. Ideally, it should sit a little below eye level, and 20 to 26 inches away from your face.
