Wireless microphones allow performers to be heard without the hassles of managing cords and handheld mics. As convenient as they may be, they can present challenges to sound engineers and affect the audience’s enjoyment of a performance if they aren’t set up and used properly. If you plan to use wireless mics for your next event, be careful to avoid these common mistakes.

3 Common Wireless Microphone Mistakes

1. Poor Battery Maintenance

Before using a wireless mic, check the batteries to ensure they’re fully loaded. If you have doubts about their remaining power, replace them with fresh ones to ensure the act doesn’t experience a blackout during the performance. Know how long batteries will typically last and replace them well in advance, and have extras by the stage if necessary. If the microphone uses rechargeable batteries, recharge them after every performance to keep them fresh.

2. Blocked Signals

wireless micsA wireless mic requires a strong signal between the antenna and the receiver to work properly, and anything placed between them can reduce the signal power and the sound quality. This includes ensuring that the signal isn't traveling through people.

Because the human body is primarily water, it absorbs a great deal of radio frequency, reducing wireless signal strength by as much as half. Therefore, place the receiver where it can capture the mic’s signal without any impediments, such as secure areas above the crowd.

3. Incorrect Frequencies

When a wireless microphone is set up at the wrong frequency, you can experience signal interference, dropped signals, or no signal at all. For instance, local television and radio broadcasts have stronger frequencies that will overpower your setup, so it’s best to avoid them altogether.

However, even frequencies that may seem compatible at first glance can have problems due to nearby activity, so check the setup before the performance to ensure the frequency is still viable, and don’t rely solely on what has worked before or the pre-programmed frequencies in the equipment.
