Without the battery, your car won’t have the power to take you anywhere. If you recently purchased a new battery at the auto parts store, it’s best to preserve it as much as you can. Follow these do’s and don’ts to help your battery maintain its power longer.

Do:

Keep it clean.

Corrosion and dirt on terminals, cables, and posts are common causes of a shortened battery life. To remove these, mix baking soda in distilled water and use a nylon-bristled brush to clean the surface. For added protection against corrosion, buy a terminal spray at an auto parts store and apply it accordingly. Remember to disconnect the battery, starting with the negative cable first to prevent short-circuiting. Afterward, secure the battery in place to avoid damaging it.

Make sure it’s fully charged.

Batteries need the charge to perform at peak efficiency, and one way to do this is to keep your vehicle running. Recharge your battery by driving for at least 20 minutes at speeds of 60 mph, but if that’s not possible, let it run idly to maintain charge. If you plan on not using your car for a while, disconnect the battery to keep it from discharging on its own.

Don’t:

Leave the lights on overnight.

Whenever possible, refrain from parking your vehicle in areas with extreme temperatures. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, which damages the internal components and shortens its lifespan. If you plan on using the heater or AC or charging your phone while idling, keep the engine running to charge the battery.

Ignore the warning signs.

Always be on the lookout for telltale signs your battery is on its last legs. Slow engine crank, difficult start-ups, dim headlights, and faulty radio are some of the symptoms that you need a replacement soon. Other red flags to be wary of are a bloated battery case and strong sulfuric smell.
