Winter weather is harsh on your property, and while groundwater won’t freeze, surface water is susceptible. Your water well can also suffer, which is why it’s wise to properly winterize and manage your system. Here are some common problems and preventative tips to ensure you have a reliable water supply throughout the season.

3 Common Water Well Problems in the Winter

1. Freezing

water-well-new-milfordThe earth naturally keeps groundwater warm. However, once water surfaces and is exposed to cold temperatures, it can freeze. This includes above-ground pipes and piping in your home. When standing water sits in piping, it will freeze and expand, which can result in leaks or bursts.

Prevent the problem by keeping your well cover on tight and re-sealing around openings in your pump house if you have one. You can also add insulation wraps to exposed piping. At night, keep faucets dripping so water doesn’t sit in the pipes.

2. Power Loss

If you have an electric well pump, power loss can cut off your water supply. This is a common problem when severe winter storms pass through. It’s best to invest in a backup generator. These can be portable, fuel filled units or fixed units that are powered with propane or natural gas. They’ll detect power loss and immediately turn on to ensure your water pump and home appliances continue working.

3. Pump & Appliance Damage

An exposed well pump can be damaged by debris and freezing temperatures. Broken parts will render it useless, so add a protective insulated cover if you have a shallow dug well. Frozen or cold water can also impair the function of some of your home appliances. Water heaters and any devices that are programmed to heat up incoming water will have to work harder to achieve the desired temperatures, which could lead to a premature breakdown.
