A clogged toilet is a common occurrence most homeowners will deal with at some point. However, when a minor clog becomes a major issue, you’ll need to take steps to prevent water damage to your bathroom and the rest of the home. While you await a plumber’s assistance, follow the tips below.

3 Steps to Address a Clogged Toilet

1. Shut Off the Water

Once you realize the toilet is clogged and overflowing, turn off the water supply. Look for the water valve, which is usually located near the underside of the toilet, and turn it counterclockwise.

2. Find the Flapper

In some cases, the flapper might not be covering the hole because its chain is twisted. Adjust the chain to stop the water.

3. Check the Float Ball

The float ball indicates whether the tank is full by rising to a certain level. If the float has cracked and taken on water, it won’t be able to rise to the top of the tank.

You’ll need to physically pull the float to the top of the tank to meet the water line. The tank will then register as being full, and water will stop flowing to the toilet.
