Back pain can be difficult enough to handle at home, let alone when you’re traveling. The cramped planes do not make it easy to find a suitable position for dealing with your discomfort. However, you can make your trip easier and more comfortable for your back with some insight and preparation beforehand.

How Can You Make Traveling More Comfortable?

1. Stretch Regularly

Make a point to stretch several times a day. Stretch before boarding a plane without putting too much pressure on it. For example, wall sits are a great option while you’re traveling, since they don’t require lying on the floor. Even lifting small hand weights could help, but get the approval of your doctor or physical therapist first.

2. Plan the Best Flight

back painIf your back pain is triggered by sitting still for a long time, schedule a flight with a layover for longer trips so that you can move around during your journey. For shorter trips, opt for a single flight to avoid the stresses of getting up frequently or lifting your luggage in and out of the overhead bins. If possible, get an aisle seat so you can stand and stretch your back when it starts to ache.

3. Pack Wisely

Keep your luggage light, especially for carry-ons, so that you don’t strain your back while lifting it. Bring whatever you need to reduce your back pain, such as heating pads, rollers, lumbar pillows, or extra cushions. Keep anti-inflammatory medication with you as well. Put everything inside a backpack, which distributes the weight more evenly than a cross-body bag, placing less stress on your back.

5. Stay Relaxed

Emotional distress can induce back pain by causing the body to enter an emergency survival mode, tightening the muscles around your spine. Consistent stress can also exacerbate existing issues in your back because the brain has difficulty controlling pain while it's anxious. You can prevent muscle pain by staying calm. Bring books and relaxing music or try meditating.
