Sundaes are a delicious treat any time of the week, but they weren’t always the staple of ice cream shops as they are today. There are numerous disputes about where this popular dessert originated, as well as who came up with the iconic name. The mystery surrounding sundaes is part of the fun and has even led to rivalries between different towns claiming to be the originators.

Where Did the Name Come From?

Not so long ago, Sunday was considered a day of rest for most American Christians. As a result, the day was considered sacred, and enjoying ice cream at a local soda fountain was frowned upon. However, that didn’t stop ice cream shop owners from fulfilling their customers’ desires for something sweet.

Who Created the Sundae?

sundaeSome historians claim that sundaes originated in Two Rivers, WI, in 1881, when a customer requested ice cream with chocolate syrup instead of the standard soda. Others believe the sweet treat hails from Ithaca, NY, in 1892. In this case, an ice cream shop owner prepared a special cherry syrup and ice cream treat for a visiting reverend.

Both desserts were made on a Sunday and named accordingly. To avoid offending religious customers, the spelling was eventually changed to sundae, replacing the y with an e.

How Is It Enjoyed Today?

Sundaes have evolved since their creation, and today, they can feature white chocolate sauce, chopped nuts, and whipped cream. Other innovative toppings include fresh fruit, rainbow sprinkles, cookie crumbles, cake batter, and cereal. Some shops even offer ice cream sundaes infused with liquor for an adult twist on the classic dessert.
