When you are subjected to loud noise—such as the sound of fireworks exploding—the vibrations can damage the hair cells, membranes, and nerves in your ears, causing either permanent or temporary hearing loss. During holidays like New Year’s Eve, this can be a real threat, since you may not always be able to avoid fireworks. Here are a few ways to prevent auditory issues caused by the spectacle.

Ways to Avoid Hearing Damage From Fireworks

1. Keep Your Distance

Just because a firework display is happening around you doesn’t mean you need to be front and center. Do what you can to put some distance between you and the firework show—by either staying indoors and watching through a window or moving to a space that is a little removed. Since most fireworks are lit at midnight around New Year’s Eve, you could also go home before then.

2. Bring Your Own Ear Protection

If you want to participate in firework lighting but you don’t want to struggle with hearing loss, consider bringing along your own hearing protection. Ear plugs and earmuffs are easy to purchase at hardware stores or hearing shops—and can also be used on other occasions, such as when using loud power tools.

3. Try Quiet Varieties
