If you wear prescription eyeglasses, it’s important to take proper care of them so you can always see clearly. While you should always have a backup pair just to be safe, maintaining your primary pair will help you extend the life of your frames for as long as possible. Here are some simple ways to keep yours in top quality.

5 Strategies to Maintain Your Eyeglasses

1. Invest in a Case

If you find yourself transporting your glasses regularly, be sure to invest in a hard-shell case. This will allow you to keep them protected in a purse, briefcase, or another bag. Even if you don’t travel with your glasses, storing them in a case at night can keep them protected should they accidentally get knocked over.

2. Remove Them When You’re Not Using Them

It can be tempting to push your frames up to sit on the top of your head when you’re not using them. Yet, it’s all too easy to forget they’re there, bend over, and allow them to fall. Always remove them when they’re not in use and place them someplace safe.

3. Clean Them Regularly

eyeglassesRegularly cleaning your glasses will keep smudges at bay, which could otherwise cloud your vision and potentially damage their surface over time. Start by rinsing them off, then spray them with a cleaner designed specifically for eyeglasses before rinsing again. Let them air dry or use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe away water.

4. Place Them the Right Way

Always avoid setting them lens-side down. Doing this could cause the lenses to become scratched, especially if you’re not putting them on an entirely smooth surface. At best, the lenses can pick up dust or debris.

5. Don’t Wipe Them While Dry

While wiping away blurry spots when your glasses are dry might seem like the easiest way to clean them, this can actually cause more damage to your lenses. Surface debris can get rubbed into the glasses, leaving deep scratches. Purchase some disposable glasses wipes to keep with you for cleaning on-the-go.
