Many homeowners don’t pay attention to their plumbing system until they run into a problem. Pipes are remarkably resilient, but eventually, they need to be replaced. Here are some signs to look for that indicate your pipes have reached the end of their life span.

3 Signs You Should Replace Your Pipes

1. Discolored Water

Discolored water is a sign of corroded piping. Even if you only notice the discoloration in the morning, it’s a problem. Corroded iron and steel pipes will make the water brown or rusty, and copper corrosion leads to a blue-green tint in the water. You may also see flakes of corroded metal. If the water is discolored, avoid drinking it.

2. Strange Smell or Odor

plumbingOver time, minerals, scale, and salts build up on pipe walls, causing corrosion. These elements end up in the water, too, which can give it an earthy or mineral taste. Copper leaching into the water may taste metallic, and lead pipes can make water taste sweet. The water may also smell metallic or unusual.

If you notice any changes in the quality of your drinking water, have the plumbing inspected and water tested, and don’t drink it until you know the cause. Also, lead pipes are no longer considered safe and should be replaced.

3. Increased Clogs

If you’ve noticed that the drains seem to clog more frequently, it could be due to corrosion building up within the pipes, making the passageway for water and sewage more narrow. Increased clogging, along with lower water pressure, are signs that corrosion is present.

If the plumbing generally seems to have reduced performance, have a professional inspection done before the pipes break or burst and cause major water damage or hazardous sewage back-ups.
