Improved fuel economy is one reason some motorists choose vehicles with manual transmissions over automatic; manual models lack the torque converter and hydraulic pump that lower fuel efficiency. Using a clutch pedal and gear shift takes some getting used to. To feel more comfortable behind the wheel, follow the driving tips highlighted below.

How to Drive a Stick

1. Start the Car in Neutral

Cars with manual transmissions have a clutch pedal as well as a brake pedal and accelerator. To start the car, press your left foot down on the clutch. Before you take your foot off the clutch and put the key in the ignition, the gear shift stick should be in the neutral position. Starting in a higher gear forces the engine to work harder than necessary.

2. Strive for a Smooth Transition

transmissionTo drive, press down on the clutch pedal with your left foot while pressing down on the brake pedal with your right. Once the stick shift is in first gear, let your foot off the brake. Begin to release the clutch as you use the right foot to press down on the accelerator. Practice synchronizing these movements, as a rough transition will make it difficult to shift gears. The car could also stall, and the clutch could become prematurely worn.

3. Avoid Riding the Clutch

When accelerating, don’t ride the clutch. This refers to the habit of leaving the clutch partially depressed while pressing down on the accelerator. When this happens, the clutch can’t engage the flywheel, increasing the risk of damage.
