As a parent, you want to do everything you can to ensure your teen has optimal oral health. In addition to encouraging good brushing habits and scheduling regular visits to the pediatric dentist, have your teen vaccinated against the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus is a common, sexually transmitted disease that causes warts in several parts of the body. It can also increase the risk of oral cancer.

What’s the Relation Between Oral Cancer and HPV?

HPV can cause cancers in the back of the throat, tonsils, walls of the pharynx, and base of the tongue. Common signs of HPV-related cancer pediatric dentists see include mouth sores, difficulty chewing and swallowing, red or white patches in the mouth or lips, and pain. If oral cancer isn’t treated promptly, it can be fatal.

When Should My Child Receive the HPV Vaccine?

pediatric dentistPediatric dentists recommend for both boys and girls 11 or 12 years old to receive two doses of the HPV vaccine six to 12 months apart. Some children may require two doses of the vaccine. For instance, those who receive their vaccines less than five months apart may need a third dose. Children who first receive the vaccine after their 15th birthday also needs three shots within the span of six months.

Is the Vaccine Safe?

The HPV vaccine is considered a safe and effective way to protect against cancers. However, your child may experience minor side effects after receiving a shot, such as mild pain and swelling in the arm where the vaccine was administered, nausea, and headache.
