If you recently received braces, you might be wondering how to update your dental care routine. Understanding which adjustments you need to make will keep your braces clean while also helping ensure the best oral hygiene as you adjust to having them. Keep the following tips in mind for the best results.

3 Dental Care Tips for People With Braces

1. Brush Properly

Brushing regularly and properly is already a cornerstone of any dental care routine. However, it becomes even more important once you have braces. With this hardware, it’s easy for food particles to get trapped, which increases your risk of plaque and bacteria. For the best results, hold the brush at a 45-degree angle facing the gums. Clean the front and back of each tooth, as well as the tongue and gums. Use an up-and-down motion for at least three minutes for a complete clean twice a day.

2. Floss Properly

dental careWhen you have braces, flossing can be challenging. Reaching between the brackets with traditional string isn’t always possible, so consider using interdental brushes instead. These small, flexible devices fit easily under your hardware and between the teeth. You can also use a floss threader, which will give you more control when guiding the floss beneath the wires.

At a minimum, you should floss once a day. If you can do so after every meal, however, take advantage of every opportunity.

3. Use a Mouth Rinse

Mouth rinses help wash away any food particles you might have missed when brushing or flossing. Because they coat the entirety of your mouth, they’re ideal for people with braces. Ask your orthodontist for product recommendations, such as fluoride rinse to combat decay or a medicated variety to help control inflammation and prevent infections.
