Medicare is the U.S. federal health insurance plan for seniors and people with disabilities. It covers doctor visits, hospital stays, and other medical procedures. Unfortunately, it does not cover all of the costs that many policyholders want to be covered. In response, several Medicare supplements—also called "Medigap"—plans have emerged to fill the void. What Is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

For an additional monthly fee, Medigap plans—which are sold by private insurers, not the government—cover many of the costs associated with Medicare insurance.

For instance, under Original Medicare, patients are responsible for copays, deductibles, and coinsurance costs. Medicare supplement plans cover all or a portion of these costs.

What Are the Advantages of Medigap Insurance?

These plans let you pay a set monthly fee, along with the Medicare Part B premium; in return, you know you won't face crippling out-of-pocket costs in the event of a medical emergency.

Even with Medicare coverage, many patients are overwhelmed by the smaller costs they face that Original Medicare does not pay for. Medigap insurance gives assurance, protects you against inconvenient costs, and ensures you can afford top-of-the-line medical care, even if you aren't financially independent. Note that Medigap plans do not cover long-term care, dental, vision, or prescription drug costs.

How Do You Enroll?

If you are over age 65 or suffer from a disability, you probably qualify for Medicare. You must enroll through the government in both Medicare Parts A and B. Then, you must contact a private insurer licensed in Utah (or your state of residence) and pay an additional premium for coverage.
