If you’re like most homeowners, you may use the terms “boiler” and “water heater” interchangeably. However, these are two very different appliances. Understanding each helps you use them effectively and communicate with your HVAC company. Here’s a helpful guide on how they differ.

Understanding Boilers & Water Heaters

Boilers

Older boilers actually boil water and turn it into steam, while newer models almost exclusively heat water without boiling it. Water vapor holds heat better than air, but its liquid form performs even more efficiently. In both cases, the HVAC system distributes the steam or hot water throughout the house via radiators or radiant wall or floor tubes. As the steam condenses or the water cools, the system collects it and repeats the process.

Water Heaters

boilerLike boilers, water heaters also heat water, as the name suggests. However, water heaters are not HVAC systems; instead they fall under the purview of a plumber because they provide water for drinking, bathing, and cooking. The system works by taking cold water from your well or municipal supply and warming it up.

There are a few ways these systems can heat water. Conventional hot water heaters heat water using electricity or gas and store the liquid in a tank. Tankless water heaters are also available, which heat water for use instantly instead of storing it. Tankless systems therefore require less space.
