Customizing your business signs will make your establishment easier to spot in a bustling commercial area. It will also help build brand recognition. To make sure yours invokes the right message to potential clients, however, consider the following design advice.

Do:

Think about color psychology.

The brain perceives different colors in different ways, so take this into account when choosing the primary hues for your business signs. When people see light brown, for example, they often think of dependability, while orange and yellow conjure feelings of joy. Blue has a calming effect and jewel tones, such as emerald and purple, are associated with luxury. Think of what message you want to convey and the mood you want to evoke when choosing the palette.

Choose contrasting foreground and background colors.

Texarkana-Texas-business-signsA one-tone business sign can be difficult to read from far away, as the text will blur with the background. So passersby can interpret the signage clearly, choose a solid color for the background that contrasts with the pigments used for lettering in the foreground. For example, orange text is easy to read on a purple background. The same is true when blue is paired with white.

Don’t:

Go overboard with text.

Even if the business sign is large, you should still keep text to a minimum. Include the name of the establishment in a large font. Under it, you could put the year the business was established or a short slogan. Adding more text means you’ll have to size down the fonts, which could make the messaging hard to read from a distance.

Choose intricate fonts.

Although ornamental lettering looks impressive on paper, embellished fonts can be difficult to read from the sidewalk or street. That’s why you should stick to simple fonts with clean lines. Trajan, for example, is a stately serif font that’s often used for law offices. Monotype Corsiva is a delicate script font that can attract customers to your boutique or café.
