Termites, bed bugs, and other pests often start as minor annoyances, but they can create serious problems once they begin to spread in your home. When spot treatments can’t get the job done, pest services typically recommend fumigation. This treatment targets the entire home to tackle even the most difficult-to-reach infestations, and it’s necessary to prepare properly to ensure it’s effective. Remember the following tips.

How to Prepare for Home Fumigation

1. Open Doors, Windows & Partitions

Fumigation works by sealing your home to the outside environment and circulating pesticides throughout the building. To make sure the treatment reaches everywhere, open all passageways, including windows, doors, and attic hatches. Next, move on to furniture. Open drawers on desks, home entertainment systems, safes, and dressers. Nothing should be closed or inhibit gas flow.

2. Seal Food

fumigation-charlestonIf possible, all food should be moved offsite. However, any food that you do keep in the house needs to be completely sealed unless it’s already in an air-tight can. Perishables should be double-bagged in nylon packages, and anything in cardboard boxes or containers should be placed in metal or glass jar. Don’t forget about medication, tobacco products, and pet food.

3. Remember Plants & Landscaping

Keep your indoor plants safe by moving them offsite with you when you leave. To prepare your landscaping for the fumigation tent, trim all bushes, shrubs, and trees back to leave at least 12 inches of space between the plants and your home. To accommodate the tent, detach all fencing attached to your home and rake mulch, gravel, and other materials back 12 inches. You should also water the soil around your landscaping to protect it during the fumigation.
