Athletic sneakers are designed to withstand the extra pressure placed on your feet, legs, and ankles during a workout. They are supposed to both keep you comfortable and prevent injury. However, even high-quality shoes won’t last forever. Once they begin to deteriorate, it will not only affect your performance, but it will also diminish their ability to protect your feet. As such, a large part of foot care is making sure to replace your gym shoes at regular intervals. The following guide will help you determine when you need new sneakers.

How Long Do Gym Shoes Usually Last?

On average, gym shoes should be replaced every 500 miles or six months, but there are many variables that affect how long each pair lasts. First, consider the type of activities you regularly participate in. Using the elliptical machine, lifting weights, or taking a yoga class are all low impact workouts that won’t cause your sneakers to wear out as fast.

On the other hand, if you’re running outside or on a treadmill, the hard surface will break the soles down quicker. Your weight will also factor into your shoes’ life span. The heavier you are, the more wear and tear they’ll receive.

What Are the Signs Your Shoes Are Worn Out? foot care

Fortunately, you don’t always have to keep track of all the miles your gym shoes have logged. There are several clues that will tell you when it’s time to replace your sneakers.

Aside from obvious holes in the soles, watch for uneven wear, worn tread, creasing in the midsoles, and too much flexibility in the heel counter. If you’re getting blisters or noticing abnormal aches and pains, these are also indications your shoes aren’t providing you proper foot care. They’ll need to be switched out for a new pair.
