At first thought, the fall may not seem like the prime time of year for your garden. That doesn’t have to be the case. Adding a versatile, durable, and beautiful Chrysanthemum to your garden will bring it to life even during the chilly season. A florist can provide some background for those who may be interested in learning more about this unique flower.

What Are the Basics?

floristThe first question people tend to ask about a plant is if it’s an annual or a perennial. Chrysanthemums are both. It just depends on which type you’re talking about. Cutting mums are annual since they lack the underground runners necessary to survive in the cold. Garden mums, on the other hand, are more durable and have a robust enough underground reach to last in colder climates.

There are several sub-types of Chrysanthemums, many of which you can find at a florist. Decorative mums have gorgeous overlapping petals with a distinct curve. Spoon mums are small flowers that feature petals that resemble spoons. Meanwhile, single and semi-double mums look like daisies but grow up to a whopping 3 feet. Pom Pom mums boast a range of colors and a dense concentration of petals.

How Should You Care For Them?

It’s best for mums to be in soil that’s not too moist. Consider planting them in an area with effective drainage, and avoid clay soil if possible. You can also opt for a raised bed.

Chrysanthemums crave a large amount of light. Try to place them in a spot that gets direct sunlight for at least 1/4 of the day. That will ensure that they produce numerous, full flowers. As long as it’s sunny out, you should water them every other day. When winter comes, place several inches of mulch in the surrounding area to help the soil retain nutrients and moisture. As winter ends, remove the mulch so new shoots can emerge for the spring.
