Ornamental wrought iron gives any home a classic, timeless elegance that will last for decades if properly maintained. While iron is extremely durable, it will corrode quickly when exposed to the elements, so it’s essential to repaint chipped or flaking surfaces immediately. The tips below will help you create a beautiful finish that will keep your wrought iron looking beautiful for years to come.

How to Paint Wrought Iron

1. Remove Loose or Flaking Paint

New paint won’t bond to the metal surface if it’s still covered in decaying paint. Start by scrubbing the railing with a wire brush, which will remove the largest pieces of flaking paint and rust. Medium-grit sandpaper should dislodge the rest of the flaking paint and roughen the surface enough for the new paint to create a strong bond.

2. Wash the Railing

3. Apply a Primer

Many types of paint can be applied directly to the metal, but most require the use of some type of primer. Check the directions on the product you’re using and, if necessary, apply a coat of primer designed to inhibit rust and corrosion.

4. Start Painting

When painting wrought iron, always use an enamel, rust-inhibitive coating, especially if your railing is outside. Aerosol paints are faster, but they’re also messier than liquid products. Whichever approach you use, it’s best to coat details and recesses with a foam-tip brush to prevent buildup in crevices and decorative elements.
