With its refined angles and dramatic flourishes, a wrought iron fence adds a touch of elegance to any property. To keep these fences free from rust and corrosion and looking their absolute best, it's important to follow some routine maintenance. Below, a few of these practices are discussed in more detail.

How to Prevent a Wrought Iron Fence From Rusting

1. Promptly Remove Signs of Rust

Rust can spread across wrought iron with surprising speed. At the start of each season, inspect your fence for signs of rust. Even the smallest bits of corrosion should be removed at once. For lighter spots, buff the area gently with sandpaper until the rust flakes off. For larger spots, you may need a metal brush or a rust-dissolving cleaner. When removing any amount of rust, wear gloves, goggles, and a surgical or mouth mask.

2. Wash & Dry the Fence

Dirt and debris contain salts and moisture that lead to corrosion, so be sure to wash and dry your wrought iron fence at least twice a year. Use a soft cloth soaked with warm water and regular dish soap; you may need to use an old toothbrush on tight spots. Then, rinse the entire fence of soap residue and dry it thoroughly with a clean, lint-free, microfiber cloth.

3. Coat & Paint the Fence

For best results, choose an oil-based rust-resistant primer. After applying it evenly over the surface and allowing it to dry completely, brush on a layer of oil-based metal paint. After the first paint layer dries, add a second layer for maximum protection.
