Modern orthodontic care can help you to transform crooked, misaligned, or overcrowded teeth into a healthy and straight smile in just about a year. However, it can be nerve-wracking to get braces for the first time. Many are afraid of the potential pain and duration of the procedure. Below, learn what to expect when getting braces, and why this routine process is nothing to worry about.

What Happens When You Get Braces?

Before your braces can be placed, your teeth need to be prepared. If the teeth are too close together, spacers may be placed between the teeth before the application to make room. Your teeth will also be carefully cleaned and polished to ensure that the brackets can adhere to your dental enamel.

After the teeth are clean, dentists will adhere metal brackets to the center of each of your teeth. Special anchor bands will be placed around the back molars to create an anchoring point for the archwire, and then this special semi-circular wire will be threaded through the brackets. They will be held in place with special rubber bands and secured in the anchors.

How Will You Feel Afterwards?

bracesHaving braces placed onto your teeth won’t be painful, but you may experience some discomfort as your braces are routinely tightened. After your first adjustment, your teeth may feel very sore, especially in the morning following the appointment. This is because your teeth are significantly shifting into place.

During the more sensitive times, you may want to consume no-chew foods, such as yogurt, smoothies, or mashed potatoes. Soup with soft vegetables can also be a healthy and comfortable food choice for times when your teeth are sore. Your dentist may recommend mild over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to reduce your discomfort.

It is important to brush your teeth and braces frequently, as food particles can get caught in the brackets. You can also use as mild mouthwash in order to kill any bacteria that may develop on the surface of your teeth.
