You hope you’ll never be in an auto collision, but it's not always under your control. In the event of other people's carelessness or dangerous weather conditions, it's important to be properly situated in your vehicle. Use these three tips to protect yourself.

How to Avoid Injuries in a Car Wreck

1. Wear Your Seat Belt

Seat belts dramatically lower the risk of injury or death if someone is involved in a car accident, but approximately one in seven people still avoid wearing the safety device, even in states where it’s legally required. Try adjusting the shoulder height and adding padding to the belt if it's uncomfortable to wear, so you can start making it a habit to buckle up each time you get in the car.

2. Sit Properly

auto collisionSeat belts, air bags, and other safety features are more effective when you sit correctly in your seat, so don’t lean over the steering wheel. Also, adjust the height and pedal to seat length, so you are at a safe and comfortable angle. Your knees should extend slightly more than 90 degrees, and your hips should be level with your knees. Recline the backrest a little more than 90 degrees; your elbows should bend a little bit while your shoulders make contact with the seat.

3. Store Loose Items

Your car has plenty of storage areas for keeping your belongings during travel. Use the glove box, console, seat pockets, and trunk to hold any loose items. If you get into an auto collision, you won’t have to worry about heavy or pointy objects hurting you or your passengers.
