Socializing your dog from an early age is crucial to their emotional development. While taking them to dog parks or to friends’ houses frequently is useful, you can also sign them up for dog daycare, where they will get the chance to interact with all manner of new friends. However, before they can have their first day, make sure they are up-to-date on the following shots—for their health as well as the other canines’.

What Vaccines Should Your Dog Have?

1. Bordetella

Bordetella bronchiseptica, or kennel cough, is a bacterium that can cause coughing or a snotty nose. It’s the most common bacteria that can be spread among pets. In a healthy adult, it can cause a mild illness, but in pups and older pets, it can cause major respiratory discomfort. A dog can contract bordetella through a fence, at a friends house with dogs, on walks, at dog parks and dog daycare; an annual booster can help prevent them from contracting and spreading the condition. It is just like the common cold and spreads prior to symptoms showing.

DHPP is a combination vaccine that helps protect your dog from canine distemper, infectious hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. As one of the first vaccines your pup will get, DHPP helps prevent the spread of these contagious viruses, especially if your dog is going to be around a larger group of tail-waggers. This vaccine is given in three doses between six and 16 weeks of age. A booster is given around one year of age and then administered every three years after that.

3. Rabies

Rabies causes inflammation of the brain in both humans as well as mammals. It’s typically more common among wild animals, but your pup should still be protected before going to dog day care. Your dog should be vaccinated by 12-16 weeks of age, followed by a one-year booster. It should then be updated every three years.

Dog day care helps keep your pup active and healthy while allowing them to socialize with other dogs.
