Having two children share one living space can be challenging. However, just because they sleep in the same room doesn't mean they can't enjoy private space. Children’s furniture has evolved to provide many design options that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Get inspired by these ideas and give your kids a room they'll enjoy for years to come.

Your Guide for Designing a Shared Bedroom

1. Save Space

A bed is the most important piece of furniture in a bedroom, and it often takes up the most space. Give your kids more room to play and do homework by choosing bunk beds.

There are many styles available, so ask your children to help choose the design they like. Whether they go for a typical bunk bed or one with a castle or pirate theme, they'll feel in control of their new room's design.

Bunk beds also provide privacy, since they can be easily outfitted with different fabrics to "disguise" the beds. Also, consider a bunk bed with a trundle bed pull-out for when friends sleep over.

2. Provide a Common Area

Turn this common space into a storage area as well by looking for cubby-style shelves. These will have space for books, games, and assorted toys, keeping the shared space tidy.

3. Create Separate Areas

Although your children will enjoy playing together in their common area, they'll also appreciate having some private space. Build a partial wall in your children's room, so they each have a place for toys, decorations, and treasured items.

If you don't have the room or the budget to create a wall, use long curtains so the kids can be alone when they want to be. There are also plenty of screens that make excellent room dividers, though be sure they're sturdy enough to stand on their own.
