Most major life challenges cause emotional hardships, especially when it  comes to divorce. If you’re having trouble rebuilding your life after this change, try following some of the tips below.

How to Move on After a Divorce

1. Give Yourself Permission to Grieve

It’s okay to be sad about your divorce. You’re experiencing a loss—the end of your marriage—and grieving is the first step to healing. Processing your painful feelings doesn’t mean that you’re dwelling on them. By acknowledging your heartbreak and moving through the sadness that comes along with it, you give yourself the opportunity to accept what is happening, so you can move forward with your life.

2. Practice Self-Care

It’s good to stay busy with work and other activities after a divorce, but it can also be important to take time to spend just on yourself. Whether it’s taking a half-hour in a hot bath, reading a good book, or getting a massage, map out some time every day to practice self-care.

3. Spend Time With Friends

Divorce is common, and it’s likely that someone you know has also been through it or has experienced a similar change and can relate.

4. Start Moving

It’s been shown that exercise can boost your mood by getting your endorphins pumping. While it’s understandable that working out may be the last thing you want to do right now, even just 15 minutes on the treadmill can help ease feelings of loneliness and sadness. If getting to the gym feels impossible, stream an exercise video from the comfort of your home or take a brisk 30-minute walk. The simple act of moving your body on a regular basis can help you feel more confident about tackling difficult life challenges.
