Prior to your contractor’s arrival, it’s important to make sure that your home is prepared for the installation of your new heating and cooling system. There are several steps that you can take before work begins to ensure that your HVAC products are installed successfully. Here’s what you should know:

Do:

Clear the workspace.

Your installer will require plenty of room to move comfortably during the process and to move your equipment without damage to your household items. In addition, this will also prevent damage to costly equipment that might otherwise be difficult to position properly. If you use the space for storage, remove everything before the contractor arrives. (That means kitty litter and debris, also!)  For outdoor units, remove yard debris and trim any large greenery that might get in the way.

Select the right size.

An air conditioner that is too small won’t cool the entire home efficiently or comfortably. A unit that is too large can also create issues as the run time will not be sufficient to bring down humidity and you may end up paying more in energy costs. During a home visit, your contractor will consider the size of your home to determine the right product.

Ask about the timeline

Ask about the details of arrival, if you need to be home, and how many days the installation scheduled.  Most contractors do not expect customers to stay home, yet need to know which doors to lock and how to get back in should they need to leave the jobsite for materials.  Homeowners can give a brief overview, including flowers/plants to avoid, where to park, where a bathroom is located, who will be coming in and out of the home, among other things, to ensure that expectations are met.

Don’t:

Leave kids or pets unattended.

Installing a new heating and cooling system is a big job. To ensure your contractors can focus and to protect your kids and pets from possible harm, keep them out of the way. You might even choose to have a friend or family member watch them for the duration of the project. This is partially because work may also be going on outside in the yard, and you don’t want to risk a pet or curious child running around the space.
