In many homes, the HVAC system accounts for a majority of the energy consumed. This consumption often increases during peak heating and cooling times. If you'd like to avoid a tremendous spike in your utility bills this summer, try implementing these savings tips around your house.

How to Save Money While Keeping Your Home Cool

1. Seal Windows & Doors

To prevent your HVAC system from kicking on too frequently, you need to block hot air from leaking into your home. This process starts by inspecting doors and windows for damage. If yours are old, it's best to update them to energy-efficient designs, yet in many instances, you can seal cracks and gaps with caulking or weatherstripping.

2. Install Window Treatments

Keeping windows closed HVACand covered during summer prevents ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) light from heating your house, causing your air conditioner to work to compensate for the solar heat. If you already have blinds and curtains, keep these closed during the daytime. Also, consider installing awnings or exterior shutters to the outside of the home to block sunlight from entering the property. Reflective blinds or window coatings are beneficial for maintaining indoor temperatures.

3. Raise the Thermostat

To limit your HVAC unit from running constantly, set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible while you are home— some recommend at least 78 degrees for optimal savings. For many, that is too warm, so at the very least, raise the temperature an additional 7 to 10 degrees from your comfort setpoint when everyone is gone for eight or more hours.  This simple step can  save up to 10 percent annually. If it cools off enough at night, turn off the thermostat and open the windows – if humidity is low! Install a programmable thermostat so you'll have more control over these daily changes and energy usage.
