The transmission is a critical part of a car. It controls gear shifting as you increase and decrease speed or go up and down hill. Because of its purpose, you want to focus on care and maintenance to keep it in top shape. Here are a few tips to keep in mind so you can continue to enjoy a smooth and safe driving experience.

How to Care for Your Transmission

1. Keep It Lubricated

A lack of lubrication can lead to parts wearing out early. Dirty fluid can cause clogs that stop the lubricant from getting where it needs to for a smooth ride. Finally, incorrect fluid can damage your vehicle and lead to hefty repair costs.

2. Stay on Schedule

The owner’s manual should have a maintenance schedule listed so you can stay on top of your transmission’s repair needs. For example, it should list when fluids should be inspected and changed.

3. Engage the Parking Brake

transmissionWhenever you park, make sure to use the parking brake. This takes pressure off the parking pawl, which is fitted to the transmission to lock it up when the car is not in use. Engaging the parking brake is especially beneficial when parking on an incline.

4. Don’t Shift Abruptly

If you are driving forward and need to switch into reverse, don’t suddenly change gears without stopping first. This is especially detrimental to the transmission if you are moving at high speeds. Abrupt gear shifts will put excess stress on components.

5. Watch the Heat

Your transmission is negatively affected by high temperatures. As you drive, it will continue to heat up and lead to early burnout, clutch failure, worn gears, and other issues.  Be aware of your transmission temperature gauge while driving and especially if towing a load.
