While it’s true that not all rashes require medical treatment, it’s best to ensure your child gets the right care when treatment is necessary. Some rashes should be assessed by their pediatrician, especially when they’re accompanied by other symptoms. The following guide explains different types of rashes, how they’re treated, and what to look for.

Understanding Rashes & When to Seek Help

What Causes Rashes?

Allergies are a common cause of rashes in kids. Certain foods, airborne allergens, and some plants can all cause bumps and hives to form on the skin. Restrictive clothing in warm weather can sometimes lead to heat rashes, which occur because of blocked sweat glands. Bites and stings from insects can also cause swelling. In some cases, outbreaks may be linked to skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

What Can I Do to Alleviate It?

Treating a rash depends on its underlying cause. If you’re unsure what caused it, try washing the skin with mild soap and water and leaving it uncovered. If you know your child has allergies, makes sure they avoid all triggers. Topical ointments and antihistamines also effectively treat skin allergies. When it comes to heat rash, make sure your kids wear loose, breathable clothing and that there is plenty of ventilation in the home.

When Should I Take My Child to the Pediatrician?

pediatricianYou can determine the seriousness of a rash by performing a blanching test. Take your fingers and press them firmly against the rash. After pulling them away, it should appear white or disappear against the skin, which means it’s a blanching rash.

Outbreaks that don’t blanch are more serious and should be checked out by a pediatrician as soon as possible. You should also seek help for irritations that don’t respond to conservative treatment, as well as those accompanied by fever or changes in appetite.
