Hawaii is home to many tropical fruits. One of the most popular is the lilikoi, also known as the yellow passion fruit. While it’s similar to its red and purple cousins, it has a tangier taste that restaurants use creatively in their offerings. If you haven’t tried this fruit before, here's what you should know about it.

Where Does Lilikoi Come From?

Lilikoi is not endemic to the islands. It was first introduced sometime in 1880 from Australia, but it wasn’t until the 1920s when the fruit grew abundantly throughout Hawaii. The yellow variety was reportedly native in Australia; however, passion fruits originated in Brazil.

Nowadays, lilikoi vines aren’t as widespread in the islands as before so the fruit is mostly found in farmer’s markets and home gardens. Despite its increasing rarity, lilikoi remains a local favorite because of its unique flavor. It’s exceptionally tart but turns sweeter once it starts to wrinkle outside. It’s best eaten when it’s small, brown, and shriveled. Half a cup of its juicy pulp packs a punch of nutrients, including fiber and your daily dose of vitamins C and A

How Do You Eat a Lilikoi?

RestaurantsBecause of its tart flavor, lilikoi is best enjoyed when juiced, jammed, pureed, or mixed with other food. Those with adventurous taste buds can slice the fruit in half and dig into the juicy flesh, seeds and all. Some mix the pulp and juice with other fruits like papaya and pineapple for added zest. Try adding a scoop of it on top of your ice cream or shave ice to balance the taste.

Restaurants and bakeries have found ingenious ways to make the most out of the lilikoi’s sweet-sour flavors. The lilikoi juice can be used as a vinaigrette, cocktail concoction, or ingredient for glazing, topping, or baking. It’s also turned into jams, marmalades, jellies, and butter. Lilikoi’s citrusy taste and high acidity make the it ideal for marinating meat and vegetables.
