Dentures and dental implants are two of the most popular ways to replace missing teeth. Naturally, each restorative option has drawbacks and advantages. If you’re missing multiple teeth and wondering whether to pursue dentures or implants, the following information will help you decide.

Dentures

denturesDentures are comprised of false teeth and an acrylic, flesh-colored base. They adhere to the existing gums and can replace the entire top or bottom row of teeth. Because they require little more than mouth impressions, getting dentures is both affordable and noninvasive. As such, they're ideal for people on a tight budget, as well as for individuals who don’t want to undergo any kind of oral surgery to restore their smile. With proper care and maintenance, including being removed and cleaned every night, a set can last for five to eight years.

Implants

Dental implants are comprised of titanium roots and porcelain, ceramic, resin, or metal dental crowns. Because the roots are inserted directly into the jaw, implants are permanent and will prevent the natural deterioration of the bone that would otherwise occur below the missing teeth. Since insertion requires a minor surgical procedure, implants cost more than dentures; however, the fact that they can last forever makes them fairly cost-effective.

Generally speaking, implants are ideal for those who only have a few missing teeth. While replacing every single tooth with an implant is not recommended, there is a procedure available that combines implants with dentures. During this procedure, dentists insert just a few anchoring implants and fill in the gaps with partial dentures.
