Devoted pet owners give their four-legged friends plenty of love and attention, so many pets are used to being the spoiled ones in the household. When a baby arrives, it's not uncommon for a pet to feel jealous or misbehave as a way of reclaiming some of the attention they feel like they've lost. Veterinarians frequently see pets in this type of situation, so they recommend these do’s and don'ts to prepare your dog or cat for your upcoming baby.

Do:

Start obedience training.

Even the most well-behaved and mild-mannered dog can benefit from obedience training. They’ll master basic skills, and you’ll learn healthy ways to curb negative behaviors. However, cats aren't as easily trainable as dogs, and many will simply hide when anyone new enters the home. In that case with a cat, just plan to give them time and space to adjust.

Introduce other babies.

veterinarianGet your pet used to being around babies. If you have friends or family members with infants, invite them over and see how your pet responds to the baby's presence. Since dogs and cats are both ruled by their senses of smell, let the pet first acquaint themselves with all the new scents a baby brings into the house. Just have the pet in the room with the baby; a formal introduction isn't necessary. Reward the pet with treats if they stay calm with the baby. If they become agitated, remove them and try again later.

Don't:

Forget boundaries.

Your pet may be used to having the run of the house, but a new baby might be given their own room, which will require some boundaries with pets. Never leave a pet alone with a baby, no matter how gentle they may be. Establish boundaries early. Put a baby gate outside of the child’s room so your pet can adjust to not being able to access it but still see what's happening inside.

Neglect your pet.

In the weeks leading up to the baby's arrival, you’ll be busy and likely more than a little frazzled. But don't neglect your pet during this crucial timeframe. Give them a lot of attention. Schedule a veterinarian appointment to ensure they're in good health. Buy a few new toys or treats to give them over the first couple of weeks after baby comes.

Before the baby arrives, bring your pet to see the veterinarians at Wahiawa Pet Hospital. They offer comprehensive animal care services, from preventative exams and dog and cat vaccinations to neutering, spaying, and other surgical procedures. They also provide pet boarding facilities if you need someone to watch your animal companion while the baby is delivered. Call (808) 621-7000 or visit them online to schedule an appointment with a veterinarian.
