After investing in teeth whitening treatments, you want to maintain the results for as long as possible. Following these do’s and don’ts will help keep your teeth white and bright long after treatment.

Do:

Consume light-colored food and beverages.

For the first 24 hours after teeth whitening treatment, consume only white, light-colored, or clear food and drinks. Choose foods like skinless chicken breast, cauliflower, peeled potatoes, white yogurt, rice, white pasta, and egg whites. Also, avoid dark food and drinks like red wine, red meat, coffee, tomato sauce, and berries so you don't stain your teeth. As a rule of thumb, if it can stain a white shirt, it can do the same to your teeth.

Brush and floss.

Brush after eating or drinking anything that could cause stains as well. However, wait about half an hour after consumption to avoid rubbing the staining agents into your enamel.

Don’t:

Smoke.

Smoking even one cigarette within 24 hours of a whitening treatment will cause stains. Also, avoid chewing tobacco to prevent staining. Using electronic cigarettes may be acceptable, but check with your dentist first.

Use colored toothpaste or mouthwash.

For at least 24 hours after your session, avoid using colored toothpastes or mouthwash, which can leave stains. Your dentist may recommend a toothpaste specially designed for use after teeth whitening treatments.
