As part of your home’s gutter system, your downspouts play an important role in directing water away from the foundation of your house. If your downspout experiences issues, it can lead to clogs that cause your gutters to overflow. This can greatly increase your home’s risk of water damage. The following design issues can easily keep a downspout from working like it should.

Top 3 Culprits Behind Downspout Clogs

1. Improper Slope

Downspouts contain an “elbow” that bends at an angle to direct water away from the house. While several different bend styles are available, some homes use an elbow that bends at a near 90-degree angle. This causes the bottom portion of the downspout to become nearly horizontal, which slows down water flow in that area. This in turn makes it more likely for debris to build up. Replacing the elbow with a more sloped joint will prevent this issue.

2. Small Gutter Outlet

downspoutsThe gutter outlet is the area that connects the gutters to your downspouts. Unfortunately, many homes have a gutter outlet that’s much narrower than their downspout. If the opening is too small, it’s easier for debris such as leaves or twigs to get clogged in this area. Installing a wider outlet will allow water to drain faster to prevent such clogs.

3. Long Joint Fasteners

Downspout components are often linked with joint fasteners to ensure that the individual pieces don’t pull apart over time. However, installers will sometimes use screws or rivets that protrude into the downspout’s interior. If this occurs, it’s easy for debris to get caught on the protrusions and cause clogs. Long fasteners should be replaced with shorter models.
