While the Atlantic Coast hurricane season began in June, it’s still important for Connecticut homeowners to prepare for possible events—especially as the peak season between mid-August and October approaches. Depending on the severity of the storms, more than 68,000 homes nationwide are estimated to face potential damage in 2019. If you have a good homeowners insurance policy, you’ll have support to recoup these damages. However, you’ll also want to keep the following tips in mind to ensure you, your family, and your property stays protected this season.

Hurricane Preparation Tips for Connecticut Homeowners

1. Get a Generator Ready

If the electricity goes out, a generator can help support your home’s basic power needs. Make sure the generator is well-maintained and has enough fuel. When using the generator, keep it outdoors. Using the equipment indoors could put you at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.  Make sure the generator does not back feed into the power grid.  Call an electrician to set up a switch before using the generator.

2. Stock up on Water & Other Supplies

Gather enough to cover at least three days but preferably longer. In addition to water, build an emergency kit that contains at least a three-day supply of food, as well as first aid supplies, a flashlight, a hand-crank NOAA®-alert radio, household tools, and personal sanitation items.

3. Seal Important Documents in Waterproof Containers

All of your important documents—such as birth certificates, titles, insurance policies, and other identification—should be stored in a waterproof container. Keep this container accessible so you can easily take it if an evacuation is needed.

4. Obey Evacuation Orders

Follow weather alerts regularly to listen for evacuation orders. If evacuation is recommended or mandatory, do not stay behind to try to protect your belongings. Gather the essentials and follow clear evacuation routes to ensure your safety. Drive cautiously to minimize the risk of auto accidents.

5. Review & Organize Your Homeowners Insurance Policy

Before a hurricane arrives, review your homeowners insurance coverage. Specifically, find out what will be covered in the event of damage. For example, wind and wind-driven rain damage can be covered by a standard property insurance policy. However, water damage caused by incoming ocean water would need additional flood insurance to be properly covered.
