Unless something goes wrong with your car’s radiator, you probably don’t regularly worry about the auto part. However, it’s a key component that plays a vital role in preventing the vehicle from overheating. Practicing proper maintenance is important for preventing issues that could harm your car in the long term. Here’s what you should know about this principal car part.

What Does It Do?

radiator The radiator is designed to protect your engine. If the engine overheats, you may notice a variety of concerning symptoms. Steam could emanate from beneath the hood, the car may seem less powerful overall, and you may hear an odd thumping sound when you drive. Coolant prevents overheating by retrieving the heat from the engine and transferring it to the radiator. Air is then blown onto the engine to cool it down. The hot air is diverted outside the car in the process.

What Are Some Signs of a Problem?

The radiator is the core component of the car’s cooling system, and your vehicle can’t operate safely without it. Sometimes there are obvious symptoms that indicate the radiator is failing. You might spot a puddle on the floor, which could indicate coolant spilling. You can take a look at the radiator and check for signs of sludge, too. When the coolant is in good condition, it’s normally red, green, or yellow. As the radiator fails, pollutants cause the fluid to discolor and eventually transform into a dirty, thick texture.

How Should You Maintain It?

The best way a driver can maintain the radiator is to check for sufficient levels of coolant. If you need to fill it up more often than twice a year, however, it could be a sign that the cooling system is leaking. Monitor the temperature of the engine as well. If it’s hotter than normal, it’s a sign that the radiator isn’t operating optimally. It’s best to take your vehicle to a mechanic if you’re concerned that there’s a problem. If your radiator is completely shot, purchase a new one at your auto parts store.
