Radiators keep engines from overheating, but sometimes this main component of a vehicle’s cooling system can go bad. When radiators no longer sufficiently filter and recycle the coolant in car engines, the rest of the vehicle’s system suffers, starting with the thermostat, water pump, and heater core. If your car is experiencing any of the following warning signs, take a trip to a local auto parts store or mechanic before the problem escalates.

4 Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore About Your Radiator

1. Leaking Coolant

Leaking coolant is a common sign the radiator is damaged. Coolant is a rust inhibitor that also prevents your engine from overheating. However, radiator tubes can still corrode or road debris can puncture the radiator, causing a hole. Puddles of fluid beneath your car could be an indication that your radiator needs to be repaired or replaced.

2. Coolant Warning Light

radiatorWhen a vehicle leaks or loses coolant, you need to add more coolant as soon as possible. Ignoring this warning side could lead to a hefty repair bill. If the low coolant light on your dashboard comes on, pull over and give the vehicle some time to cool down. After you’ve waited 30 for minutes or so, head to your mechanic, or add more coolant yourself.

3. Overheating

The temperature gauge will point toward HOT when your engine is overheating or close to overheating. There could be many reasons this happens, including a clogged radiator fan, which will prevent heat from escaping the engine compartment. You can experience overheating without a breakdown, but repeated episodes will inevitably cause one.

4. Sludge

Bad gaskets and cracks in the radiator will allow contaminants into the radiator. As a result, the oil-like substance will eventually turn into a thick brown sludge that can clog the entire cooling system. When fluids aren’t allowed to drain properly, they gather inside the radiator and need to be flushed out by a professional.
