Whether you’ve been involved in an accident or your vehicle broke down, call a tow truck to transport your car to an auto shop. However, calling for towing doesn’t mean that you’re no longer in danger. Follow the safety guidelines below while waiting for the towing company to reach the scene.

Do:

Get as far from moving traffic as possible.

If your car is still drivable, move it onto the shoulder. Leaving your vehicle in an active lane of traffic increases the risk of getting rear-ended by another driver. Once you’re off the road, only exit the vehicle if it is safe to do so.

Take steps to increase your visibility to passing motorists.

Don’t:

Forget your belongings.

After a tow truck takes your car to the auto shop, you may not have access to it for a few days while mechanics repair it. Gather all your personal belongings before the truck arrives so that you have everything you need in the meantime.

Leave with anyone other than the towing company you called.

Some unsavory individuals try to prey on stranded motorists, so it’s safer not to accept help from anyone you don’t know. Before leaving with a tow truck, double-check that they are from the company you contacted.
