Water leaks, no matter how small, have the potential to do significant damage to your home, which can lead to large amounts of money out of your pocket. Some issues are apparent, like water forming under the sink or around the toilet bowl, but a leak behind the showerhead could remain hidden for years or even decades. This guide explains how to prevent costly plumbing issues.

What’s the Problem With Leaks?

When you see a dripping faucet in the bathroom, you may not consider it a major issue; however, it’s a sign that a pressure seal has failed. This fault in the pressure lines will affect how the water runs throughout your plumbing system. This is one of the safer leaks since the water is dripping into the sink; however, other small leaks just like this one may be happening in your walls, floors, or ceiling. Most bacteria and molds form in dark, moist places, so if there are hidden plumbing issues, you should act fast to resolve them. Water also affects most items it comes in contact with, so metal pipes will rust, wood will rot, and insulation will become moist, which can lead to rodent nests and mold, so have an expert check it before the damage gets worse.

How Can You Find a Leak?

PlumbingUse a tissue to look for leaks. Wipe around the connections under your sink and look for any water on the tissue. There should be absolutely no water; even a small amount is a sign of a small leak.  Place the tissue around the base of the toilet and flush to determine if your toilet leaks. There may also be a leak from the tank to the bowl. Place a couple of drops of dye in the tank, and don’t flush. Give it about 15 minutes and see if the dye has entered the bowl. If it has, then you have a leak.
