Most people understand how important regular oil changes are for the health of their vehicle. However, your car relies on several other fluids that need to be checked regularly. Some need to be topped off, while others need occasional replacement. To keep your car running well, here are the most vital auto fluids to keep an eye on.

4 Auto Fluids to Check Other Than Motor Oil

1. Engine Coolant

Engine coolant, also known as antifreeze, flows through your engine in a series of tubes and collects heat generated there. It then flows through the radiator, where it disperses this heat to keep the engine at a manageable temperature. If coolant levels become too low, the car will overheat. Check the level every few weeks, especially in springtime and summer. When the car is cool, take off the coolant reservoir cap and fill the fluid to the marked line.

2. Brake Fluid

Brakes operate by using hydraulic fluid to transmit and transform the downward pressure you exert on the brake pedal into squeezing pressure at the front of the vehicle. This pressure causes your brake calipers to move the brake pads against the rotors, which causes friction and slows your car. Check brake fluid levels occasionally by opening the reservoir—the cap should be labeled either DOT 3 or DOT 4— and peering inside. The fluid should be translucent with a golden color. Fill it to the indicated line and have it flushed and replaced every two years or so.

3. Transmission Fluid

It should be a bright pink or red and needs to be replaced every 70,000 to 100,000 miles. Any reputable oil change shop can perform this for you.

4. Wiper Fluid

Windshield wiper fluid clears mud, dirt, and other debris from your windshield so you can see during inclement conditions. Without it, the wipers simply smear the windshield, which makes seeing a challenging and driving dangerous. Check levels every other fuel stop and keep the fluid reservoir filled so you’re not caught unawares in a rainstorm.
