One of the most important steps in a wedding is scheduling garment alterations. An ill-fitting gown or suit can spoil the big day. No matter how well a skilled photographer can hide this, if it feels awkward or uncomfortable, that is something you’re going to remember. Giving a tailor ample time to make modifications is the only way to avoid this. If you're unsure when to make your appointments, here is what you need to know.

When to Book Wedding Garment Alterations

Wedding Dress

Whether the perfect dress was found soon after the engagement or after the venue was chosen, the initial tailoring appointment should be scheduled for three months before the wedding. Most tailors and bridal boutiques recommend three fitting sessions: one to establish what alterations must be done, a second to follow up and check the fit, and a third to finalize the details. Of course, depending on the construction of the gown, this could require more sessions. The subsequent fittings should be scheduled each month, with the final session within two weeks of the big day. Although this may seem to be cutting it close, it’s to accommodate any weight fluctuations.

Groom & Groomsmen

alterationsAs the bride’s gown is the sartorial focal point, the groom and his party should wait until after the bride has chosen her dress. Once they have done so, their alterations can be scheduled within two months of the wedding. Generally, suits don’t need as many modifications as gowns, so two fittings will usually suffice.

Bridesmaids

For bridesmaids, the same guidelines as the bride usually apply. Two to three fittings are best, within the same three-month timeframe. Although their dresses typically aren’t as elaborate the bride’s, having a broader timeline ensures members at least have their dresses.
