Whether you run for fun, exercise, or professionally, you want to know how to keep your feet healthy and strong. It’s especially necessary that you know how to prevent accidents and injuries, especially as your feet make continuous impact with the ground. Here are a handful of foot care tips for runners.

4 Foot Care Tips for Runners

1. Train Strategically

If you’re new to running, start slow. You don’t want to push yourself to run too far and potentially overextend the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the feet. Begin by running a mile or two, and gradually increase the distance over time.

2. Stretch Beforehand

Stretching before running foot careis crucial for preventing injuries. Sit on the floor with your legs extended, and wrap a towel or strap around your feet. Pull the towel or strap toward you for about 15 to 30 seconds, and repeat the stretch a few times. Additionally, stand on a step with your toes on the edge, and slowly lower your heels to the ground. Repeat in sets of five to ten.

3. Wear the Right Shoes

Another key to foot care while running is wearing the right shoes. You’ll need trainers that fit comfortably, are lightweight, and provide plenty of cushioning and arch support. Prevent heel striking by selecting a pair of shoes with a lower measurement difference between the heel and forefoot.

4. Visit a Podiatrist

People who run often should visit a podiatrist a few times per year. As a preventative measure, your doctor will custom fit you for orthotics that will improve your balance, support your arches, and put less pressure on your ankles, heels, and feet.
