Gardening can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby, but it takes dedication and patience. Different plants require different types of care and growing techniques. Here are a few tips for beginners that will help you start your garden off right.

A Beginner’s Guide to Gardening

1. Learn About Local Plant Life

Every flower and vegetable has a list of requirements that help them grow. These include region, temperature, sunlight, water amounts, and soil types. Find out which options thrive in your area and learn about the care instructions for those plants. Ensure that your garden will fit the sunlight requirement of any flowers or vegetables you grow and that you’ll have easy access to water.

2. Start With Easy Options

plantBecause gardening can take a lot of work and knowledge, start with plants that are easier to care for. Vegetables are often hardy and grow well even if you have low soil quality and water levels. Certain flowers, such as sunflowers and daffodils, are fairly easy to grow and will add a pop of color to your garden.

3. Maintain Good Soil

Good soil involves many pieces, from the pH balance to moisture retention. Poor soil will keep roots from growing and won’t provide a lot of nutrients. Incorporate amendments to your soil depending on the needs of your plants; sand can loosen up soil that holds on to too much water, and manure and/or compost can help retain moisture while adding nutrients.

4. Water Regularly

Water is just as important to your plants as good soil composition. Water your garden in the morning, before the sun can evaporate it from the soil. Install a spraying attachment on your hose so the heavy water from the normal spout doesn’t disrupt delicate leaves or roots. You can also set up a drip irrigation system, which leads water directly to the flowers, preventing water waste.

5. Keep Weeds at Bay

Regular weeding is important to help your garden get the nutrients and growing space it needs. It can be strenuous, so add mulch to your flowerbed to keep the weeds at bay. For example, woodchips, hay, and gravel are good options to spread over the soil around your flowers or vegetables, but not too thick, 1-1½ inches is ample.
