A crucial part of pet ownership is knowing local laws—and Nebraska has a number to familiarize yourself with. These range from how many you can have to how often they must see a veterinarian. These are key to your pet’s, and the community’s, safety and by sticking to them, owners will avoid fines and other consequences. The following guide looks at some of the most pertinent.

Ownership

You have to have owned your pet for 30 days to be considered an owner. Rules state that you can only own three dogs, two mini pigs, and five cats, or eight pets total; rules are different for agricultural animals. If you plan on breeding them, you’ll need to obtain a permit from the Nebraska Humane Society. Otherwise, owners should consider taking their pets to the veterinarian to get spayed or neutered.

Vaccinations

All pets must be vaccinated by a veterinarian. This includes giving dogs a rabies shot every three years once they reach a certain age. Additionally, you have an obligation to meet all of their developing health needs, as lack of care can constitute animal neglect.

Home & Public Care

veterinarianIn public, you’re required to clean up animal waste. Dogs and mini pigs must be on a leash or confined in a yard at all times. Pets that aren’t microchipped must wear collars and I.D. tags. If your dog continually barks and disturbs neighbors, Animal Control has the right to remove them. Pets cannot ride in truck beds unless in an anchored crate or with cross ties. Dogs may not be tied up outside for longer than 15 minutes; any period longer than that requires monitoring by an adult aged 19 or older.

Service Support

Pet owners with certain disabilities can legally be accompanied by registered service animals. These include hearing and vision guide dogs, psychiatric support animals, seizure alert animals, and allergen alert animals. They’re legally allowed in hotels, places of lodging, on public transportation, places of worship, and private places where the owner is a member. You have a right to equal housing without special fees.
