With summer in full swing, you’ll be spending more time outside and facing sun exposure. It’s important that you practice proper eye care during these times so you don’t create vision problems. Making a few changes can have a significant impact, so adhere to the following to make it safely through the season.

3 Tips for Summer Eye Care

1. Wear Sunglasses

Perhaps the most important rule is to wear sunglasses. Harmful UV rays can pierce your eyes and cause temporary blindness, and UVB rays may lead to cataracts or cancerous growths. Invest in a pair of quality sunglasses with 100% UV ray protection. They should cover the entire eye and surrounding skin. Make sure to wear them even on cloudy days.

2. Stay Hydrated

When they become dehydrated, your body can’t produce tears, leading to irritation and temporary vision problems. Aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses and more if you plan on being outside for a while or engaging in strenuous activities. If dry eyes become a regular issue, see an eye care specialist for a comprehensive exam.

3. Don’t Rub Your Eyes

Introducing bacteria into your eyes can lead to infections and other problems. Since you’ll be outdoors, you’ll likely be exposed to more dirt and bacteria, as well as allergens like pollen, that can cause eye problems. This especially applies to kids. Make sure everyone washes their hands regularly and avoids rubbing their eyes or putting their hands near them.
