Root canals are an important procedure, but there are also a variety of myths surrounding it. Many people don’t understand how they work, when they’re needed, and what to expect. If you may need one, here’s what you need to know.

A Basic Guide to Root Canals

What They Involve

root canalA root canal involves removing a tooth’s pulp while preserving the rest of the tooth. It’s a simple outpatient procedure that doesn’t require any general anesthesia in most cases, and it’s not painful. The dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic so you don’t feel any pain. They will then drill a small hole in the tooth to remove the pulp that sits at the center of the tooth. They then shape and pack the interior with an inert material. They’ll seal the hole with a temporary crown until you can have a permanent crown placed on the tooth.

Why They’re Necessary

This procedure is necessary to save a severely infected or damaged tooth. It is often done as a result of tooth decay, gum disease, or an injury to the tooth. It is done instead of a tooth extraction, so you can maintain your smile and avoid bite alignment problems. After a serious infection or injury, the pulp or nerve tissue will need to be removed, since this area is prone to infection. If left alone, bacteria will cause an abscess, which is a pus-filled pocket at the roots of the tooth.
